The Pineridge Residence was designed to capture the awe of its surrounding landscape in a subtle, energy-efficient design. Despite the home’s generous square footage, the client desired the home to remain modest from a distance. Given the site’s prominence from a variety of surrounding locations and the steeply sloping topography of the site, creating as minimal transitions as possible while capturing as much of the natural views as possible from each space of the home was a sizeable challenge.

Knowing the build would require significant excavation and snow and wind mitigation features, budget was a constant consideration throughout the design process. We oriented the design around the existing driveway approach to the site while executing a well-composed low-profile design with a unique approach to the organization of the programmatic elements. To ensure an energy-efficient design at such a large scale, we made generous use of natural daylight and passive solar design and clear-story design while integrating the structure within the natural landscape.
