Crescent Barn Multi-functional Living

Crescent Barn

At the four-way intersection of prairie sparseness, mountain silhouettes, contemporary expression and barn aesthetics sits the distinct Crescent Barn. Designed to create a single unit with multiple functions that blends both modern and rustic sensibilities while mimicking the mountains beyond, this well-thought space seamlessly accommodates a variety of needs for storage, recreation, living and agriculture.

In addition to combining functions that were seemingly dissimilar in their layouts, this design required creative solutions to move from concept to reality when executing the project within budget. We employed SIPS panels and wood framing to maximize the budget and allocate more for specialty elements that define the design, such as the art, steel and wood trusses. Exclusive to this design, the integration between the wood framing and the unique curved roof is a custom feature that the builder nor the manufacturer had done before.

To meet both aesthetic and sustainability goals, the wood cladding on the façade is 100% recycled 50-year-old Wyoming snow fence. Likewise, the use of structurally isolated panels vastly improved the building envelope performance, contributing to the structure using 40% less energy compared to a standard facility of its size. The end result? An iconic multi-functional design that is exceptionally sustainable, energy-efficient and budget-conscious.
